(You’ll pardon the glut of XanGo Soccer posts—the blog has some catching up to do after RSL’s rapid piling on of victories, honors, records and recognitions.)
May was good to the Salt Lakers. After a disappointing 0–3–1 record in April, Real Salt Lake won all five games last month, setting a new club record for consecutive wins.
The 5 victories featured 5 goals from Álvaro Saborío (named player of the week and player of the month) and 3 from Fabián Espíndola, but RSL’s real beauty is not found in one or two superstars, rather in their depth and versatility. To date, 11 different players have added a tally to the team’s league-leading 21 goals. Even the defense is chipping in with sweeper Jamison Olave putting in two and marking backs Chris Wingert and Robbie Russell each scoring their first career MLS goals last month.
Another good omen in May: one of the five wins was on the road, and along with their 3–0 trouncing of San Jose in March, RSL has already matched last season’s dismal total of 2 away victories. Couple that with their near perfection at home—unbeaten in their last 18 games at Rio Tinto Stadium—and Real looks poised to confound the naysayers who claim their 2009 title was a stroke of luck rather than a hard-won validation of superiority.
RSL faces D.C. this Saturday and the Galaxy next Wednesday. Here’s to 7 in a row.
